Beautiful full lips are all the rage. Why are women so desirous of full and pouty lips? How did lip augmentation go mainstream? What’s in a pout? Well, quite a lot, as it turns out. Full and luscious lips are the most preferable lip shape. Social scientists attribute this trait of full lips as being highly desirable.
“Facial features serve as a cue of attractiveness,” explains Marisa Coen. In her essay, “The Science of Relationships,” she explains that fuller lips have long been desired by women because, as evolutionary psychology suggests, they signify strong mating potential. It’s no wonder a quick fix like lip augmentation with dermal fillers has risen in popularity.
We see famous people with their perfect lips and want what they have. Influencers and makeup artists on social media channels like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram frequently share tricks to make your lips look fuller, videos about a lipstick that looks good on everyone go viral, and advertisements for lip augmentation have become almost as common as teeth whitening. It comes as no surprise that we are so fascinated with having lush lips.
Thanks to the advancements in dermal fillers, changing the size and shape of your lips can be achieved with specific facial fillers made for lips. When properly injected, FDA-approved fillers are safe and effective. They can add volume and shape to your lips. Some can even smooth out wrinkles or lipstick lines.
What Can Go Wrong With Lip Augmentation?
While facial fillers, such as Juvéderm Volbella® XC, Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC, and Restylane Kysse™ are made exclusively for lips, you should make sure to select an expert injector perform your lip augmentation. It matters who is doing your injections!
Unfortunately, I have seen many patients with botched lip jobs. Some of the “mistakes” are overly large lips, uneven lips, bumps, swelling, discoloration, and lips that just look unnatural and unattractive.
There are more serious effects that can occur with lip augmentation procedures in the wrong hands. If a dermal filler is injected in the wrong place, it can potentially:
- Block your blood vessels
- Cause the death of skin tissue (necrosis) resulting in pain and skin discoloration
While rare, side effects are more common from an inexperienced and unskilled provider. In my practice, no nurses or other providers with limited experience or understanding of the skin will do your injections. Injections are only performed by me, Dr. Rebecca Baxt, a board-certified dermatologist with over 20 years of experience.

Warning!
As lip augmentations procedures have grown in popularity, unfortunately DIY filler options have sprung up! You might be tempted to try one of these at-home injection kits, devices, or products that say they can give you plump lips, but at a fraction of the cost… BEWARE!
One of the most popular lip techniques on the DIY market is an at-home injection kit. Stop and consider the risks. The lips are prone to bruising and swelling and it is possible to inject the product into a blood vessel. Also, do you know where the filler products comes from? At-home fillers may contain foreign substances that foster allergies and more.
Finally, a DIY injection is likely to result in a poor and asymmetrical outcome. It isn’t worth the risk.
