Today’s advanced laser and light therapies are safe and effective in treating people of all ages with skin conditions resulting from rosacea and acne. At BAXT CosMedical® we have excellent outcomes using IPL therapies for patients with rosacea, specifically the erythrotelangiectatic (vascular) form.
Photofacials reduce redness and brown spots, stimulate collagen growth to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and can cause skin tightening when done over time.
What Is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic condition that affects the skin. Rosacea symptoms include facial flushing, persistent erythema (redness of the skin), small red or purple clusters, often spidery in appearance, and pimples or cysts. Episodes of flushing can lead to the development of red lines called telangiectasia. There are rosacea patients who only have redness and other patients have pimples, and some have both.
Rosacea is a common condition that affects people of all ages. However, more women are usually affected in mid-life, but it can be seen at an earlier age. While men are also affected, they typically do not seek early dermatological care and often present with later-stage rosacea and rhinophyma, a nose that is enlarged and red, bumpy, and bulbous.
Early diagnosis and treatment is important to avoid these symptoms. (Learn more, read Acne and Rosacea Briefs PDF)
Many patients do well with traditional antibiotic therapy, but the papulopustular rosacea lesions and vascular components, are often persistent causing concerns for patients.
What Symptoms Of Rosacea Are Treated With IPL?
For patients troubled by persistent flushing caused by rosacea, Dr. Rebecca Baxt, board-certified dermatologist recommends Photofacial or IPL to dramatically reduce rosacea redness on the face and neck.
We have been performing Photofacials at BAXT CosMedical® for over 20 years and have always updated our technology to the latest machine, which is now the updated M22 from Lumenis.
IPL is also an excellent non-surgical treatment to reduce the visible signs of acne, sun damage, aging, and hyperpigmentation.
How Does IPL/ Photofacial Work?
Photofacials/ Photorejuvenation/ IPL treatments go by many different names and have many clinical and cosmetic benefits. During these treatments, wavelengths of light are shined at the face targeting the effected skin.
Patients report they feel a bit warm but there is no downtime. The treatment lasts about 20-30 minutes, though you should allow for longer as that just accounts for the actual treatment and not your total time in the office. Patients are able to walk-in and walk-out. Some patients are a bit pink after they leave but this is temporary and easily covered with makeup or sunscreen.
At BAXT CosMedical® our patients typically schedule monthly treatments for 5 months. Afterwards, patients come back for maintenance 2 to 4 times a year, depending on their skin condition or aesthetic rejuvenation goals.
WARNING! Tempted to Purchase a DIY Product?
At-home hand-held laser hair removal and IPL devices are not as powerful and certainly not as effective as a laser or light source device found in a dermatologist’s office. I advise my patients that they may be marketed as “lasers”, but they typically aren’t and can cause harm to your skin, including burns, rashes, and other types of skin irritation.
