As we age, women often develop vertical lines, wrinkles and folds around their cheeks and mouth area. These lines are often referred to by a variety of terms, including, accordion lines, vertical wrinkles, and smile lines. In addition to aging, facial lines occur due to commonly repeated facial movements, including smiling, frowning, and laughing. Over time, these lines from motion can become permanent.
These static wrinkles often bother people, because they tend to create an older, more tired appearance. With the aging process, facial folds and wrinkles become more prominent due to the loss of facial fat and skin elasticity, but they can be treated!

4 Tips to Effectively Treat Accordion Lines
Listen To The Latest Episode Of The Dr. Rebecca Baxt Podcast
Dr. Rebecca Baxt offers 4 easy steps to treat accordion lines and to keep your skin healthy and vibrant!
Tip #1: Protect Your Skin From The Sun
Yes, you’ve heard this before, but it bears repeating: the most effective way to prevent skin damage is to stay out of the sun. Since this isn’t realistic, make sure to use a high-quality sun block or sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. If you are outdoors on a sunny day, wear a wide brimmed hat for better protection—a baseball cap just won’t do the job!
Tip #2: Practice Good Skin Care…Moisturize, Moisturize, and Moisturize!
Most women recognize the importance of caring for their skin, which acts as a vital protective barrier. Dr. Baxt emphasizes the need for focused attention to deal with environmental factors—both indoors and outdoors—as well as the effects of aging. Maintaining good skin care hygiene and using moisturizes and other anti-aging products can help combat dryness, flakiness, itching, and dull-looking skin while also reducing wrinkles and fine lines.

It is always best to use a high-quality facial moisturizer and apply it immediately after showering or bathing to lock in the moisture on damp skin. Additional effective skincare products include Vitamin C creams, glycolic acid serums, and retinol creams.
Need a Moisturizer Boost? Ask Dr. Baxt about SKINVIVE™
Unlike traditional fillers that add volume and contour to the face, SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® enhances hydration, improving the overall quality and texture of the skin.
Tip #3: Stimulate Your Collagen Growth
Your body naturally produces collagen, and “as people get older, changes in collagen structure occur that weaken the bond between the different layers of the skin. This could be why people develop wrinkles and other features associated with aging skin.”1 In fact, By the time you are age 40, your skin experiences a loss of approximately 20% of collagen.Fortunately, various lasers and other devices can stimulate your skin’s natural collagen production. If appropriate for your facial enhancement goals, Dr. Baxt may recommend laser options like Fraxel®, Clear + Brillant®, Ultherapy®, or ellacor® to address wrinkles and collagen stimulation.
Tip #4: Facial Fillers
With the aging process, your skin loses facial fat and elasticity which contributes to the formation of accordion lines. To correct the accordion lines, Dr. Baxt offers a variety of dermal fillers to add volume to the treated area. The advanced FDA-approved facial fillers offered at BAXT CosMedical® include: Juvéderm® Ultra Plus, Voluma®, Volbella®, Vollure®, Volux®, Restylane®, Restylane® (Refyne, Defyne, Lyft, and Kysse), Sculptra®, Belotero Balance® for accordion lines, and SKINVIVE™—all which are helpful.
Today’s facial fillers are excellent options to enhance your facial appearance and restore a more youthful appearance without surgery! (See BAXT CosMedical® Patient Before & After Photos)
